Meet Park Grove’s Architects

You’ll have already seen the Park Grove condominiums for sale, and been struck by just how unique and amazing they look. As homes, there’s nowhere else quite like them in Miami. Who’s creating these homes, and what’s their vision for Park Grove? Meet the architects behind the development, and see where their vision is taking these developments.

OMA

OMA, the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, is the company behind the Park Grove development. The company was founded in the 1970’s by Rem Koolhaas and Elia Zenghelis, when the two met at London architectural school the Architectural Association. Koolhaas was a student there and Zenghelis was a teacher, and the two started putting their ideas together to come up with new and exciting ways to change up city architecture.

Their first foray into designing was with a competition to design a new Dutch Parliament building in 1978. OMA was one of the first prize contest winners, with their designs being published and discussed widely in architectural circles.

The company went on to have several successes over the next three decades. They continued to compete with their designs in the 1980’s, getting more international attention and making names for themselves over the years. Their designs started being built all over the world, and have always been striking, innovative and beautiful in equal measure.

OMA’s Works Of Note

There are plenty of buildings that OMA have played a part in, and you can extensive lists of them online. Here are some of the most notable buildings that they designed:

The Euralille (1994): This 70 hectare design brought business and civic centers together in northern France. The high speed trains running through this hub brought the area to life when it had once laid dormant.

Maison a Bordeaux (1999): Designed with the owner in mind, who uses a wheelchair, the house had a platform in the middle that could reach all three stories. This made it easier than ever for the owner to get about his house.

Seattle Central Library (2005): This 11 story steel and glass design has become a striking addition to the Seattle skyline in recent years.

Prada Transformer (2009): This multi use pavilion built in Seoul is designed to rotate, giving users the flexibility they need.

The People Of OMA

There are two architects who have the most impact on the up and coming Park Grove Miami project. The first is of course Rem Koolhaas himself, who is still one of the partners of OMA. He’s a well known figure in architecture, having published several books about architecture in the past. This includes Delirious New York, A Retroactive Manifesto For Manhattan. His books have been described as some of the most influential and important books in architecture in recent history. Under his leadership, OMA has grown as a business, with offices now in Rotterdam, Beijing, Hong Kong, and New York.

Heading up the New York office is partner Shohei Shigematsu, who joined OMA in 1998 and became a partner in 2008. He oversees all work that’s completed in North America. This includes the Milstein Hall at Cornell University, The National Beaux Art Museum in Quebec, and the Faena Arts Center in Miami Beach. He’s also taken part in several collaborations that have blurred the line between architecture and art. These have included a seven screen pavilion in Cannes with Kanye West, and a studio renovation for artist Cai Guo Qiang.
