A Brief History of Coconut Grove

South Florida has so much to offer residents and visitors alike. Ocean breezes, fertile land, lush growth, Miami has long since been regaled as a paradise on American soil. Park Grove Miami is a new construction nestled in an old and much-revered part of Miami. These striking residences are designed to match the energy of the area in which they reside. Overlooking the pristine waters of Biscayne Bay, it is easy to see why this area, Coconut Grove, has been a constant choice area of residence since the very first settlers came into the area.

The Early Settlers of Coconut Grove

Many were drawn to the year-round sunshine of Florida, the constantly growing greenery part of the “fountain of youth” mythos that built up as more people of European descent learned of the land of flowers to the south. Settlers came to Florida in search of fortune and the first settlers to come into Coconut Grove found a land rich in resources, freshwater springs, arable land, the abundance of the sea. Coconut Grove became Miami’s first official settlement in 1825 and has been considered the soul of Miami ever since. Late in the 1800s the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club was established, making what had been a home of mariners into a destination for recreational yachting. Around the time the yacht club formed, Coconut Grove’s first families were planning and building grand waterfront estates. Some of them still exist to this day. In 1895 the Florida East Coast Railway was extended into Miami which brought new residents, along with their wealth and resources. These newcomers also built impressive homes around the bay.

Coconut Grove Enters the Great War

At the beginning of World War I, Coconut Grove entered the national spotlight for hosting one of the first Naval Air stations in nearby Dinner Key. Most of the nation’s most notable airmen were trained here making Coconut Grove a center of technology and progress. Eventually, the war ended and Coconut Grove’s airbase at Dinner Key became a seaplane hub for one of the world’s most important airlines at the time, Pan-American Airways.

Annexed but still Separate Culture and Creativity

The city of Miami annexed Coconut Grove in 1925, which was not a popular decision for many longtime residents and causes a lot of controversies. Even though it was officially absorbed into Miami proper, that decision seems to have been one of government convenience only. Today Coconut Grove is one of Miami’s most recognizable areas with its separate culture still intact. Coconut Grove still lacks the fast-paced feel and lifestyle of the city inside whose geographical boundaries it is located. Some of the world’s most well-known artists have been drawn to the relaxed, open-minded, creative atmosphere of Coconut Grove. Among those who called the lackadaisical, accepting atmosphere home were the Poet Robert Frost, the playwright Tennessee Williams, and the singer Joni Mitchell. To this day, it remains a place where tolerance, creativity, and free-thinking are hallmarks of the community.

Park Grove Pre-Construction

It is in this atmosphere, in an area steeped in such distinguished history that Park Grove seeks to bring their luxury condominiums. The residents of Park Grove will be able to view the glorious waters of Biscayne Bay as an extension if their home, the bay visible from almost every angle of their new home. The lush greenery, gardens, and groves around the residence will be an extension of the verdant growth that has been associated with Coconut Grove since before the very first European settlers arrived. Residents of Park Grove, whether they are yachting enthusiasts, artists, musicians, or just people looking for a break from hectic city life, will find that they fit right into the relaxed and accepting climate of Coconut Grove. There is something for everyone in the day to day life of Miami’s most famous neighborhood, the schools are amazing, with seven private schools located in the neighborhood, one over a century old. And being located only seven miles from the center of Miami means that Park Grove residents can still enjoy the wiles of the city and come home to relax in a seemingly another world.
